Awarded the second prize for the 8th edition of #versionathyssen for my reinterpretation of Ilyá Chashnik’s ‘Suprematist Composition’ 1923.

Chashnik’s painting presents geometric and architectural shapes placed in a rhythmic pattern. Upon observing it, I visualised it in 3D. Throughout the modelling process, the 2D composition began to look like a familiar object, one where books and objects could be placed between the differently coloured components. The shapes suspended on the canvas visually become heavier and locked in place as the object takes shape. The floating elements remain through the animation, giving each shape a unique movement that displaces itself.

Ilyá Bookshelf is an extruded form of Chashnik’s ‘Suprematist Composition’, giving visual emphasis on the rhythmic quality presented in the painting.
